Chapter Twenty-Three

Lori stood and then paced around in Nancy’s motel room a couple of days later, towering over her sister with her arms crossed. Her lips were pulled tight into a thin line, and her brow furrowed as her eyes pleaded silently. She watched, waited, longed for some kind of response while she gauged Nancy’s expression. The evidence before them was everything Lori had, and if that couldn’t sway Nancy, then it couldn’t sway anyone. Or as Sam used to say, “ye be fucked, kiddo.”

The information had been surprisingly easy to obtain. All it took was a trip to the next town’s library, a computer with internet access, and a whole lot of patience. Lori had sat in the chair with an ache burning up her back, but her determination helped see her through. Buried deep in websites, she’d found evidence that conflicted with what she’d seen.

Now, she had what she needed. Now, she stood a chance.

Nancy looked at Lori like she was unsure. Lori knew it was a great idea, but Nancy didn’t think so. Lori could sense the doubt emanating from her like heat off a radiator. This wouldn’t work if Nancy wasn’t on board; Lori knew she had to convince her, but she was too questioning to easily be persuaded.

“I don’t see it,” Nancy finally said, glancing up from the bed where she had the paperwork spread out in front of her. “I just don’t see it. There’s some history on a farming place and—whatever this is—a newspaper clipping, but that’s it.”

“From three years ago,” Lori proffered.

“And what’s that got to do with anything?”

Lori exhaled in a frustrated grunt and dropped onto the bed, spreading out the relevant pages. “This is everything you need to know about Richmond Agricultural. The short version is that they went bust six years ago and the owner skipped town. At least, that’s what the unofficial word was at the time. Now, look at that newspaper headline.”

“‘Local Man Burned Alive in Car.’”

“And look at the name.”

“George Richmond.” Nancy stared at Lori, her eyebrow cocked.

“The owner of the company.”

“So? It could be a coincidence. A wiring fault in his car or a dropped cigarette butt could easily explain this.”

“It’s not.” Lori rummaged through the papers, her heart dancing in her chest as she searched for further information to convince Nancy. She found it and dumped it in front of her sister. “Two more reports of people being killed in their cars, just like Sam was. This one even mentions a Dodge RAM leaving the scene, but there’s nothing after that.”

“Lori…”

“A Dodge RAM was what I saw before my crash. It was what ran us off the road. Now, let’s see.” Lori pulled out another wad of paper, photocopies of Nate Hill’s journalistic pieces. She’d read it again and again, hearing his words in her mind as she read them aloud. It was unbearably relieving, like a shroud being lifted after many years, only to find everything had gone to shit. “This is the man I was telling you about.
